You can play endless bag of gold only during an interaction. So you are not allowed to play it just for the fame when you are not at a location where yo can interact. (Be aware that the first expansion changed this rule. So when you play with lost legion you can play it just for the fame. BUt that is stated very explicit in the lost legion rulebook.)
there is another advanced action card, (dont know the name but its a white one) that lets you gain another advanced action card if you pay a several amount of Influence, i guess that also counts as "interacting" where you can play influence cards
