I've created an unofficial Mage Knight FAQ on the BGG wiki. Hopefully this will provide a space for people to update the FAQ and take a load off Paul.

And then when it is complete, as I say, I'm more than happy to pretty it up and put it in a proper pdf with the same layout as the MK rulebook (but maybe a bigger font) :)

Reply: Mage Knight Board Game:: Rules:: When to return the die set by Mana Draw? (can you use it in the same turn?)

There's a discussion initiated by me on When to return the die set by Mana Draw? (can you use it in the same turn?)

Example: I want to use three
's in a turn but unfortunately there's no
in my inventory nor
in the Source. Can I play Mana Draw with a
to gain
and at the same time have the access to the
just set by my Mana Draw?

To summarize my inference:
1. To "use a mana die" is same as to "use a mana die as mana".
Indirect source: text of Mana Draw's basic effect (which simply tells you to "use one (additional) die").
And it's limited to once per turn usually.

2. To "take a mana die" is different with to "use a mana die"which is usually once per turn.
Source: Official FAQ thread.

3. In general rules, it is defined when to return the mana dice you used, but not for the mana dice you took/set.
Source:

rulebook page 9, End of the Turn - 1. wrote:

The first thing you should do is reroll and return any mana dice you used to the Source.

As contrasts let's pick cards that contain the word "take (a die)". They are:
* Tactic Mana Steal (you have to return it by the end of the turn in which you use it as mana);
* Spell Mana Claim (you can keep it until the end of the Round);
As I noted in the parentheses, the other cards specify explicitly when to return the die you "took". Unfortunately it's not the case for Mana Draw. Maybe it seems obvious enough for some of us to think that the returning of such a die happens at the end of your turn; but, without direct support, I would like to ask for a clarification.

A weak opposite hint I have in my mind is from the Immediate Effect section in LL rule book (page 9). The stronger effect of Mana Draw is obviously an immediate one. Everything it changes must be completed (including returning the die you took) if not explicitly stated otherwise, and if it's not a modification to "some value or rules".

Thanks in advance.

Just in case you don't check that thread again.

Check the rules: Page 5, "A players turn" section 7. point a.

Clarifies the return of the die.

As for using the die you're setting, where does it imply it's usable, it says you can set it to a colour not use it.

You have not removed the restriction in bold below

Page 5, "Using Mana" section 3.

"3. The Source represents pure mana present in the world. Each turn, a player may take one mana die from the Source and use it as mana of the color shown on the die."

The Powered section of mana draw does nothing to remove this restriction, it does however remove the "roll requirement" of any dice return rules.

Hi, new to the game.

When I use Tovak's "Who needs magic?" skill to sideways a card for +3, am I actually *prohibited* from taking a die from the source later in the turn, or does it apply if I haven't taken a die *yet*?

Both interpretations seem reasonable to me, but the card text doesn't really privilege either (neither a "yet" nor any explicit mention of prohibition in there), so I'm not sure.

The way I interpret it you would be prohibited from using one after playing the card with the skill.

Hey there, great thread!

My question is: can Tranquility be played during combat to draw 1/2 cards?
We had two different approaches to the question:
1. Yes you can, because you aren't healing.
2. No you can't, because it's a card with the healing icon.

Thank you!

Ok, I'm a bit confused about the multiple attacks critters from Lost Legion. The base rules state that you take damage from each unblocked enemy. The rules for Multiple Attack says that an enemy is considered blocked only if all of it's attacks are blocked. But in a separate section, it when talking about blocking each attack, it says to treat them as coming from a separate enemy. So can I block 1 attack from a creature with multiple attacks, and take the damage from the rest, or is it all or nothing?

Thanks for the help!

You can block individual attacks to take no damage from that attack, other attacks from the same enemy are immaterial.

An enemy needs all of its attacks blocked to be successfully blocked for the purposes of counterattack etc. You can successfully block an attack (taking no damage) without successfully blocking the (multiple attack) enemy it comes from.

OK, I'm going to fight against windmills but I feel in the mood to start this fight:
If you recognize that your question is about Lost Legion stuff, why aren't you asking your question in the Lost Legion forum?

(nothing personal - it just would be fine to keep the boards as organised as possible by adding threads/questions to the proper board - If I have a question I don't want to search 2 different boards for the answer just in case someone asked in the wrong forum.)

Good point. Honestly, I was searching google, and found this thread, and didn't pay attention to which game's forum it was under. My bad.

In a couple of threads there is this question:

When counting "distance" because of Healing Ritual, do you count only revealed hexes or should you count "as the crow flies"?

There is no clear consesus: some users invoke the "General Volkare" rules from the expansion (as the crow flies), and others show that most other rules in the game count only revealed spaces (though that's often because the hero has to move on them).

An official ruling would be appreciated.

Has anyone come across the situation where you use Diplomacy and Noble Manners to block? Do you gain the fame/reputation in combat or is it only for "interacting" with sites? The card does say "this interaction" but with diplomacy I am able to spend the influence during an assault/combat.

Thanks!

Combat is never during interaction. Ergo no noble manners for diplomacy blocking.

Notice the "if". You can use it during blocking, but you will not receive the Fame and Reputation.

One quick question : Can I discard a Wound card with Improvisation? It only states 'Discard a card', so I guess yes... Thanks!

No. Wounds don't qualify as "cards", except for effects that specifically mention wounds.

Rulebook p4 6.a. 'Wound cards can be never discarded or thrown away this way, unless the effect explicitly allows so. Thus “any card” refers to any card in your hand, except Wound cards.'
