I know you can do it during PvP. It's less clear whether you can do it at "any time" even when you are not taking other actions. Presumably, when your opponent plays Mana Radiance and chooses a color, it's too late to react by converting your crystals to mana to avoid taking Wounds. Can you do it after he plays MR but before he chooses a color? How about if it's his turn and you just suspect he's about to play MR? My thinking has been that you can only take actions like this when it's actually your opportunity to act in some way, e.g., in PvP, but not just at random during other players' turns.
